Our founders, Andy Philips and Glynne Townsend, met while working at a local startup in Scottsdale, AZ. Their natural ability to solve problems and desire to create value soon outpaced their current positions, and left them wanting more. This quickly developed into ideas for a new company and resulted in the pair quitting their day jobs and taking the leap!
With that, Ridealong was born – a smart dog collar that would enable dog owners to communicate, engage, play, and watch over their dog from anywhere in the world. The product utilized GPS, an accelerometer, camera, speaker, microphone, battery, Bluetooth, WiFi and cellular technologies. Although the idea gained traction, it ultimately went unfunded.
However, the journey of the development experience resonated with Andy and Glynne, along with the opportunity to make smart devices, apps and data for just about anything. They refused to give up! From there, 28 Gorilla was born.
Since our start in 2017, we have become one of the fastest growing professional engineering consultant companies in Chandler, AZ. We boast clients from across the U.S. and service anyone from Fortune 50’s to small startups that are still thinking about their name.
As electrical engineers and entrepreneurs, we operate with a problem, solution and value proposition mindset. Our focus is simple – to provide our clients with innovative technologies that allow them to beat the competition.
We love hearing ideas – contact us today to find out how we can help bring those ideas to reality!
Over the years, Glynne had built a library of names that have seemed catchy to him. For their new company, he asked Andy to select one from the list, and he chose 28 Gorilla.
He thought it sounded cool and punky, reminding him of Blink182 and his days as a drummer in a college rock band. He was denied on this name many occasions, but ultimately won after being persistent.
This was much to Glynne’s wife’s frustration. You see, 28 Gorilla was the password she used for everything, being that it was her favorite number and animal.
Needless to say our first job as a company was to change all her passwords!
Before Co-founding 28 Gorilla, Andy held positions in global engineering leadership at both A.O.Smith and Generac, where he managed engineering teams in the US, Europe and Asia.
He holds several patent’s in motor design and led Generac’s smart platform initiative and New Product Introduction team. He is a former UL delegate for the standards committee and has founded and launched numerous data based companies including HDScores Inc.
When he’s not leading the technical efforts of 28 Gorilla, Andy is an American History enthusiast and longs to play the drum set he still has in his garage from his days in a punk rock college band.
Glynne started his career in Automotive, as an apprentice toolmaker at Lucas (TRW), where he advanced through several technical, design and program management positions before moving into global sales and business unit management.
Deciding to become an entrepreneur, he joined an M.I.T start up, A123Systems, before going on to found companies in the Automotive, Energy Storage, and IOT space.
Glynne has launched technologies from the University of Michigan, raised capital from VC’s, HNW’s and Government programs, built successful teams, partnered with Fortune 500 companies, and grown and exited start-up’s via IPO and Private Sale.
He spends his free time in the gym, hiking with his dogs, and being a soccer dad.
